Reserved instances (RIs) are a way to purchase the use of AWS resources at a discounted rate. Kion helps you make the most of your RIs by showing you usage data and alerting you to upcoming expiration dates. We also surface the math used to calculate reserved instance rates, making it easy to rightsize and identify potential savings.

Viewing RI Data at a Global Level

  1. To see the all RIs purchased at the global level, select Cloud Resources->Reserved Instances from the left navigation. You’ll see the name of the RI, the type, usage, the billing source of the RI purchased, and the account in which the RI was purchased.
  2. Click on the name of an RI to get additional information like start and expiration dates.
  3. Scroll down to see who in your environment is using these reserved instances at an account level and the data on percent used.

Viewing RI Data at a Project Level

  1. To view data at a more isolated point of view, select a project.
  2. Click on Financials->Reserved Instances to see data at the project level. Non-admin users can view RI information at this level.

Setting Enforcements

If you’re an admin, in the global view you can also access enforcement functionality.

Enforcements can be triggered based on percent used of total or percent remaining of total, as well as by relative time. For example, you can create an enforcement to send an alert 15 days before expiration of the RI.

You can read more about additional configuration options in our support documentation.
